Meal prep for beginners (the ‘no fail’ guide)

Let’s face it, meal prep for some can feel super overwhelming, especially if it’s not something you’re used to.

But as the saying goes “fail to prepare, prepare to fail”, and this is just one of those things that you ultimately help you stay organised, adhere to your plan and contribute to your long term dietary success.

To help you become meal prep boss, here are some handy tips that will your make your life a little bit easier.

  1. Make a meal plan

Writing down a plan for the week will help you stay on track and stop you reaching mindlessly for snacks. Write down what you’re going to have for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. Then prep your meals, according to the plan.

  1. Make a grocery list (and stick to it)

Once you have a plan, you can write down your grocery list and it’s important you do this because there’s nothing worse that wandering around the supermarket aimlessly trying to remember what ingredients is supposed to go in what meal. You’ll most likely end up forgetting something and have to go back!

Here’s my go-to Grocery List that might give you some ideas:

  1. Stock up on containers

Any veteran meal prepper knows the sheer importance of having a Tupperware container cupboard (with lids!!). Invest in about 10 containers that will fit your meals and it’s a good idea to get some smaller containers for your snacks like nuts.

  1. Dedicate time in your week to prep

For many people, one of the biggest obstacles for meal prep is ‘time’ so make sure you give yourself that. Don’t try to meal prep after a full day of work and instead clear out a couple of hours on a Sunday and do it then instead. It may seem like a hassle and a lot of work at first but it will soon become part of your weekly routine.

  1. All systems go!

This is your chance to show off your best multitasking skills! Find recipes that can be cooked at the same time. For example: you might have eggs in the egg cooker, chicken in the pan, beef mince in pot and two different trays of vegetables in the oven. We want to be as productive and time efficient as possible here people!
